Protecting Your Skin

When the weather changes from the warm beautiful days of summer to the bitter days and nights of winter, it is safe to assume that your skin requires a different kind of treatment in the cold winter months than was given during the summer season.

During the winter periods, the skin is exposed to the dry indoor heat of central heating, hot showers and baths. These are all factors that rob your skin of moisture during the winter. We are also customed to wearing bulky clothes which forces the skin to produce less of its own natural moisturiser and can lead to itchy and flaky skin.

The best way to protect the skin and to keep it healthy is to implement a skin care maintenence stratergy. You should replenish your skins moisture frequently. For the body, keep as much moisture locked up in your skin as possible by taking lukewarm showers. Avoid long, hot baths which can dry the skin and apply a good moisturizing body wash during the shower. Applying moisturizers to the skin within a few minutes of stepping out of the shower can help trap water in the upper layers of the skin and decrease dryness and itching.

The skin on your face is especially vulnerable because it's the only part of your body that's constantly exposed to the elements during winter. To protect your face, wash with mild facial soap and tepid water. Don't overuse products that contain alpha-hydroxy acids, they exfoliate the top layer of skin, which is good for dry skin, but leaves a new layer of skin that has no protection against bitter winter weather. If you use prescription treatments for acne or other facial conditions, talk with your dermatologist about switching to a more moisturizing version of your formulation.
